Closing of School
Children being transported to and from school activities are priority one for this highway department.
The highway department has had no written policy for advising the school system to close.
Approximately 23 years ago, the highway superintendent and superintendents of schools devised the following procedures: at approximately 5:30 AM, the highway superintendent or a representative from the highway department would contact superintendent of schools and advise him/her to close for inclement weather.
We have always tried never to dismiss buses prior to normal scheduled hours due to the fact children could possibly be left unattended after being dropped off from the busses.
Relative to the bus company, when transporting school children during inclement weather we have always advised management to instruct school bus drivers never to attempt driving a roadway, especially hills that have not been properly maintained for whatever reason. School bus drivers are instructed to sit and wait for the highway department to make the roadways passable and assist in whatever manner, to get your children home safely.
We have communications with the bus company, schools and the highway department at all times.
